Hey guys, im just wonderin' why tripods arent allowed to use inside marina mall? and when we went to dubai, in front of the burj al arab welcome gate, even though we're beside the bushes, the guard approached us and told us not to use our tripod. Do you have nay ideas why? thanks.

I dont really know why they do it. same thing happened to me. About tripods and cameras. Another thing for cameras. In some places they allow small digital compact cameras but they dont allow digital SLR cameras. If you bring a compact bridge cam, perhaps something like canon S5 IS or SX1 IS they will try to stop you from taking pictures, because it looks like a dslr camera. But if you bring something like Nikon p6000, of the same category as the Canon bridge cams, but looks like a small rangefinder, most probably it will be okay. "No problem, its a small camera. its not SLR."

I dont really know what they are thinking. Perhaps some arbitrary rules are out there. "Stop them if you feel like it." sort of thing. So what now if I put a speedlite on the hotshoe of the Nikon p6000 ? hehe. these guys are very confusing bro...

This thread will help others to know what cannot be photographed

Let me start.

1. Photography inside the fish market is prohibited.
2. Photography inside the Gold souk is prohibited.
3. Photography in the Mina Port is prohibited.
4. Photography inside the Marina Mall with SLR (professional camera) is prohibited. You can shoot with point & shoot cameras.
5. Do not take pictures of any accidents.
6. Do not even point your camera towards women or police or police cars.
7. Photography of any military place is prohibited.
8. Photography of any palace is prohibited.

I was able to shoot with my SLR camera in Fish Souk, Gold Souk and Mina Port but it is still not allowed.

I once took a photo of an accident scene but I was stopped by the Abu Dhabi police.

Rule of thumb is you should ask permission first before taking any photos.

Now in shooting with a tripod:

The reason for not allowing you to shoot using your tripod is:

1. If you are using a tripod it means to say that you will be shooting a photo for commercial purpose.

Even in other countries shooting with a tripod is not allowed unless you have a permit.

Hope above helps.

Thanks Derek. Now what would be the reason not to take pictures of an accident? If I should ask permission, from whom.

The reason behind taking pictures of an accident is UAE censorship.  They don't want the world to see how careless UAE drivers are.

But as you can see recently the pictures taken from the Abu Dhabi highway accident were taken not by the press.  The Dubai public bus that hit a pajero and killed the driver were taken by a Gulf news reader.

Rule of thumb is : Be discreet when taking a photo of an accident scene but remember it is still not allowed.

Just like what happened to me while on the way to work in Mussafa, I was taking a photo of an accident scene but was seen by a policeman and was strictly asked to stop taking photos and asked not to do it again.

The reason why I was taking the photo was I wanted to show my boss why I was late for work.

Huh?  Bawal pala sa mall ang DSLRs?  We have been roaming around Wada, Khalidiya and Marina Mall with our DSLRs.  Fortunately, wala namang nagbabawal sa amin, yet.  Naku, good thing I have read this one.  Thanks!

I'll be a PRO photographer someday!  Just wait and see...

Lai,

They don't allow you to use your SLR camera's with tripod.  In Marina Mall they don't allow you to use your SLR camera.

I have been shooting inside Abu Dhabi Mall, Marina Mall, Al Wahda and Khalidia Mall with my DSLR but have not faced any problem.

You need to be discrete when shooting.
